The lens that changed my photography

When I attended photography school, we focused a lot on camera settings, lighting situations, and post-processing.

Note: Affiliate links are included in this post What I didn't learn much of (if any), was how the right lens could entirely transform your photography! Years later, I discovered the online world of photography forums and Facebook groups. I started to see a trend in others sharing their camera and lens settings with apertures as low as f1.2! I was curious and astounded, the lowest f-stop my lenses could reach was 4.5 so I was quite bewildered.

I spent thousands of dollars on a photography education and I had absolutely NO CLUE what a prime lens was! (I'm even slightly ashamed with sharing this with you now)

Ashamed as I may be, I am happy to share my discoveries of how this one lens was responsible for changing my photography and taking it to a whole new level.

Meet my friend, the 50mm 1.8.

lens that changed my life 50mm The ideal starter prime lens for natural light portrait photography. You can also refer to it as the "nifty fifty". I am not surprised in the least of how it earned it's nickname because it's just a nifty little lens! When I started using this lens, I had to get used to it not being a zoom. In a way, it forced me to become more creative because I was the zoom and I was responsible for creating the frame.  It's funny how when you are forced to DO more work, it IMPROVES your work.

The more your practice, the better you become.

I couldn't believe how much I had been missing out over the years by NOT using this lens, that's how quickly I fell in love with it! It had improved my photography overnight it seemed, and within a few months, I was paving the way to exceeding my expectations! For a little over $100, this baby completely evolved my skills and realizations as what I could achieve as an artist, not a bad investment if I don't say so myself. Investing in good glass is one of the key ingredients of what makes a great photo, and this little puppy does the job well-done without the hefty price tag!

Which lens changed your photography/which lens do you plan on investing in first to take that step? Leave a comment below and talk about it!

  • You called it the ideal starter prime lens for natural light photographers. I have this lens and love it! What would you suggest as the next step or steps up in a prime lens for natural light photographers?
