PHOTOGRAPHERS: THIS IS WHY YOU AREN’T MAKING MONEY

how to book more photo sessions

YOU MIGHT HAVE HEARD THE PHRASE “STARVING ARTIST”  ALL TOO MUCH IN YOUR TIME, BUT HOW TRUE IS IT FOR YOU?

In the short amount of time I have been in this industry, I have seen all ranges of income levels.

From high-end travel photographers who easily rake in 6 figures a month to shoot and burners who are lucky if they get by with $200 a week.

THE PHOTOGRAPHY ‘POPULUS’ IS AN EVER-DYNAMIC GROUP OF BEINGS.

The beautiful thing about photography is that you can determine your own income goals and with a little bit of determination and skill, you can succeed to no end.

SO, WHY AREN’T YOU MAKING ANY MONEY BEING A PHOTOGRAPHER????

Let’s list a few reasons of what might be holding you back from reaching your highest potential.

YOUR WORK NEEDS IMPROVEMENT

I hate to be a buzzkill right off the bat, but one reason why you might not be making as much money is that your work isn’t at a professional level, yet.

Not all, but most people can quickly tell the difference between a great photograph, and a bad photograph.

Where does your work stand???

Take a step back and honestly critique your work on various subjects such as light, composition, subject matter, editing, etc. If you find that you might need a little work, do some digging and find resources to help you improve your craft.

YOU DON’T HAVE A CONSISTENT MARKETING PLAN

I cannot tell you how many times I have gotten this email: “Heather, I don’t know what I am doing wrong, but I cannot get clients for the life of me. I am active on my Facebook page, but no one ever books me! I’d like to quit my job, but I am having a hard time starting my photography career. HELP!”

If you are putting all of your eggs in one basket in business, do not expect to succeed.

Getting clients is more than having a website and Facebook page, it’s about putting yourself out there every single day and taking every chance that you can to put your business in the limelight.

YOU’RE NOT CHARGING ENOUGH

Yes, you read that right.

You might think that charging crazy low prices will attract more people, and while it might for awhile, it will also run you into the ground with staying busy.

Let’s say you want to earn around $40,000 income with your business. You would roughly need to shoot 260 sessions and charge $250 to makeup enough to cover business costs and taxes(this is a very rough estimate).

Now, if you were charging more and marketing to a higher spending client, you’d need to only do 65 sessions with a $1,000 profit from each client.

Again, these are rough estimates that don’t go into detail about what your costs of business are and what kind of numbers you want to make, but do you see where I am going with this?

If you keep charging less, you’ll make less unless you want to work 6x more. Just something to think about…

YOUR DON’T STAND OUT IN THE CROWD

Sorry sweetie, but you’re nothing special (at least that’s what others see). With dozens of other photographers in your area, how do you stand out from them?

How does your work differ?

How does your business outweigh the others?

You need to dig down deep and think of ways to stand out to potential clients and really make your business shine and hard to not notice.

YOU’RE WORKING TOO MUCH

If you aren’t charging much to begin with and you’re working yourself to death, chances are you are making less than minimum wage.

Why be in business for yourself if you can make more money flipping patties???

Having a quick and efficient workflow from start to finish is essential to make the most out of being in business for yourself. Utilizing yourself to be more profitable in your workflow is where you can cut out a lot of your time.

Using Lightroom presets will cut down your work load, but also knowing how to use Lightroom effectively.

If you could edit your photo sessions in under and hour and create beautiful albums in 15 minutes, how much more money would you be putting into your pocket???

If any of the above reasons apply to you, do not fret my friend, we’ve all been there at some point!

With a few small tweaks to your business game plan, I’m sure you’ll be able to get on track to start making more money in no time!
